Mary Jane Irwin's Forbes.com article on pet technology includes a bit of insight on the pet industry from Catster's very own Ted Rheingold. From the article:
You can always turn to social networks to set up play dates for your pet with other pets. Dogster and Catster, sites that started out as a way to share photos of beloved animal companions, are now repositories of information on everything from grooming to finding veterinarians in foreign countries.
Now nearing a combined 1 million members, the sites have even become places to plan real-world meet-ups. On Dogster, about 100 West [Highland] Terriers united recently in South Carolina--with some pets and owners traveling from as far as six states away.
Indeed, pets are no longer creatures you just keep in the backyard and rarely see."It used to be [that] the dog was kind of around and someone would often forget to feed it," says Dogster Chief Executive Ted Rheingold. "Now they have a family-member relationship. When you make plans, you are thinking about what you're going to do about Sparky."
And that's where technology can step in and lend a helping hand.
You can read the whole article here.
These mysterious shots were placed under the doormat here at Catster HQ this morning. Can you make heads or cat-tails out of them? Because we sure can't.
And this postcard was included as well:

Hi all
Welp, it was quite a carnival ... but we had to update our code so when people uploaded gif and animated gifs they get sized exactly the same way as all the other images people upload. The reason we hadn't done that from the beginning is that the .gif image format was actually proprietary and owned by Unisys. So when we first launched there wasn't good server software to resize gifs so we uploaded the original size and tried to squeeze them as we could into the site.
So it was fun while it lasted, but the over-sized images were becoming too common and messing up too many pages. If you ever wondered why your pet's pages, or group pages or forums pages were getting stretched too far to the right it was because of this issue.
The first fix went live today such that all newly uploaded gifs will get resized exactly as all the other images do. Later this week we'll go back through all the images already uploaded and resize them.
Sorry if we're raining on anyone's parade, it just became too much of hindrance to the overall experience not to fix now that we finally could.
Did your cat's friend count suddenly drop overnight?
Not to fear you're still entirely love by your pals.
A small flea got into our code a couple months ago and duplicate entries were getting adding to our friends database. What this meant was that for each new friend connection you made, two were being added to your total pal count.
On the 15th, around midnight pacific time we removed all the duplicates and fixed the bug.
So we're sorry if it's a shock, but all your friends are still your friends, there just aren't any phonies in your total count any more.
So no fear. We and all your pals still love you! So sorry for the mistake in the first place and any confusion it may have caused you.
