Buying Cats From Private Individuals

Advantages: Newspapers are full of ads for mixed breed kittens offered "free to a good home" or for a nominal fee. These felines can make excellent animal companions, provided you carefully examine the kittens, their surroundings, and, if possible, their parents. (See Kitten Pre-Acquisition Inspection Checklist.)

Disadvantages: Such litters may not receive proper veterinary care or socialization. Also, such accidental breeding increases the already serious problem of pet overpopulation. If you do nothing else, encourage the owner to have the mother (and father, if possible) spayed and/or neutered.

Quirk BooksThe Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
