Ideally, even indoor cats should wear a collar, with identification tags attached, at all times. This is because unforeseen circumstances could land even the most homebound feline out on the street. To assure that it makes its way home safely, its tag should include your name, address, and home and work telephone numbers. The cat's rabies vaccination and license tags (stamped with your veterinarian's name and telephone number) should also be included. In many areas this is mandatory. However, given cats' talents for slipping out of collars (and the practice of fitting them with breakaway models, which won't choke them if caught on something), tags are not the only (or even best) ID method. Cats can also be tattooed or have a microchip installed. The microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is injected just under the skin between the shoulder blades. When scanned, it yields information that assists the cat's finder in locating its owner. Chip scanners are used at most lost-cat intake centers, including humane societies, city pounds, and veterinary hospitals. However, a "chipped" cat should still wear a collar for identification.
The Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care. The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
