Cat Health > Teeth Cleaning and anesthesia

| Purred: Tue Apr 16, '13 6:07am PST | | | | | Thank you very much everyone! We have been seeing the same vet for about four years now. They have always mailed an estimate and discussed procedure with us prior to receiving estimate. I am planning to go in today and ask about the list of injections and what it all means. They also included things on the list like biotene water additive. So I am hoping the price is less then what is quoted seeing how I will not get the bottle of Biotene.
Hopefully all my kitty friends and their families in Boston area are safe after yesterday.

| Purred: Sat Apr 13, '13 9:31pm PST | | | | | I will check with the vet about bartonella. I already received an estimate based on Goo's annual check-up appt with the vet. I'm not sure if we should see another vet that does a dental check-up/xrays before an estimate? We live about 30-40 minutes outside of Boston. I can't believe how expensive it is! I grew up with cats and never had an issue! | | | | |

| Purred: Sat Apr 13, '13 12:06pm PST | | | | | Thank you all very much! I'm just concerned that it is a significant amount of medication/injections for my little 12lb cat! I plan on speaking with a vet tech when I call to make the appointment. They have given us a low cost and high cost of getting his teeth cleaned which is $550 and 880. Seems insane that it is so much and that there is a significant difference in the price. I will do whatever I can to make sure he stays healthy seeing how he is either four or five years old.
We feed primarily wet and supplement with dry once a day. Goo tends to swallow it whole although we've found that he does chew the greenies that we give him. Are greenies a good choice to help with his teeth?

| Purred: Thu Apr 11, '13 5:55pm PST | | | | | Hello Everyone!
My little Goo has severe Gingervitis or as the vet calls it gingivitis. They have recommended we get his teeth cleaned. We just received the estimate in the mail and I am a bit concerned with all the medications he will receive and secondly the cost. I plan on contacting the vet to ask more in depth about the estimate but figured I would check here first!
The estimate lists Acepromazine injectable, buprinex injectable, ketamine, midazolam injectable, anesthesia inhalent (1hr), and then it lists further down extractions if needed and then cefazolin injection, local anesthesia, doxyrobe gel, metacam injectable and a few other things like cbc and radiographs.
It just seems like there are a lot of "injectables" and medications that my little kitty will receive for a cleaning. Any thoughts?

Cat Health > Post Urinary Blockage worries.
Baron

| Purred: Tue Mar 19, '13 4:37pm PST | | | | | My baby Goo went through something similar a few years ago. We noticed that he would run into the liter box, stand for at least 10 seconds and then bolt out of there. He very rarely produced anything until one afternoon he was on top of a comforter piled on the couch and he peed. There was so much pee and it smelled so strong.
We took him right into the vets and they said it was most likely a blockage that he was able to clear himself. They told us to feed him the Hills prescription diet stuff and keep water bowls full. We ended up feeding him that stuff for about 6-8 months when we noticed/realized he had gained a significant amount of weight. We aren't sure if it helped with the pee/blockages as we noticed that there was still pee in various places in the basement. We assumed it was him but had no proof seeing how we have five kitties.
We ended up switching entirely to wet for all kitties at that point. Goo was not happy because he loved his dry crunchies. We switched to proplan selects wet and then we started to feed a combination of friskies (there are three kinds which I believe are grain free) and fancy feast (also grain free flavors). After switching to entirely wet, we noticed that there was no more pee in random places and less poop in the litter boxes. Goo was able to lose a few pounds and get back down to a healthy weight (Goo was about 18lbs and is now down to about 13).
We buy the large friskies cans (13oz) and the 3oz fancy feasts.
Good luck! Have you tried local animal shelters? Sometimes they have programs to help with the cost of food or local food pantrys sometimes get kitty food. I hope your kitty feels better soon!

Cat Health > Annual Vet Check-up and vaccines

| Purred: Tue Mar 19, '13 4:24pm PST | | | | | Thank you for your posts! Both kitties are doing fine. I didn't realize that the one year vaccine is better for them than the three year. I believe this is the first time they have gotten the three year vaccine. I will ask the vet next time we go back. Goo will need to go in for his teeth cleaning. I was so worried seeing how Goo eats EVERYTHING and always begs for more food all the time. We had to put safety locks on our cabinets to keep him from pulling food out! | | | | |

Cat Health > Annual Vet Check-up and vaccines

| Purred: Sat Mar 9, '13 6:11pm PST | | | | | Hello everyone!
Please help us. I'm very worried about goo. I tried to change title but can't figure out how!
Goo and his brother took a trip to the vets office today! Both received three year rabies shots and the form says FCVRP. We were told that Goo has severe gingivitis and needs a teeth cleaning soon. What does this entail? I believe Goo is four or five and is fed mostly wet food. When we give him dry, he swallows it whole. The vet recommended we add biotene (sp?) to their water. Any thoughts on this?
More concerning- Goo is now acting lethargic, walking funny and not eating food that is presented. We have never seen him refuse food of any kind. His brother also refused the food. They received their shots at 10am and had a meal around 630 which they both ate without any issues.
Could the vaccines be bothering them now? Any info? I'm hoping he improves soon or else it might a trip to the kitty er. :o(

Behavior & Training > Cat dominating the other
Baron
1120674 |
| Purred: Thu Nov 15, '12 6:31pm PST | | | | | This happened to our kitties as well when we had one shaved. The one shaved is typically the one that dominates the others but the roles were reversed. We ended up feeding the cats on either side of a door. They love food and this way forced them to be near each other with a barrier. Once that was okay, we then introduced a baby gate where they could see each other but didn't have access to attack. They would hiss some but after a few days things improved. Good luck! | | | | |

Cat Health > I have to find a place that will not kill 3 feral kittens

| Purred: Thu Aug 16, '12 6:02am PST | | | | | Hello!
I have no idea where you are in florida or where your county is in comparison to popular cities. Here is a link to No Kill Animal Shelters for you to sort through. I'm not sure if these places will take feral cats/kittens. Are they friendly? http://www.nokillnetwork.org/d/Florida
