How long did it take for a new cat to get use to other cats in the household?

I just found a new 3 year old female wandering outside with apparently no home. After searching I did locate where she was suppose to be but I believe she is really not wanted there. I have two 1 year old males and a 14 year old female. I can see they are testing each other out. Evidence of scratches and I believe teeth marks on the ears but nothing serious. Should I just let them be and let them work out their dominancy??snoopy

Well, I am very picky about who I will be friends with but when we got a new kitten, mom kept him in another bedroom to get adjusted and then let us sniff his stuff and vice versa. Then we peeked at eachother through the doors.

There was some hissing at first but it takes some cats a while to get used to another one. Some become buddies right away. Each cat will show how they feel. Like me I hiss when someone is in my space. It lets the other cat know I am uncomfortable. I think over time most cats work it out. Some don't but usually will enough to get by. They may not be best buddies but they handle it.

I hope everything works out. It can be tough and you need lots of patience!

It will work itself out. Hopefully more quickly if the new arrival does not try to dominate the others. Meowmy's new kitten and I play with each other, take naps together and eat from the same bowl, and we've only lived together for a couple of weeks. Sometimes we annoy one another too, but usually whichever one of us is not being social goes and hides from the other (I like to sit on meowmy's bed, or crawl under the sofa; Storm hides in the big closet and takes naps). The first couple of days were the roughest, because I got really upset about meowmy getting a kitten. Once I figured out she had potential as a friend, though, I relaxed. I groom her lots now, and even let it go if she swipes at my tail every once in a while (but I do not allow her to eat my treats, I get hissy and smack her if she does that).

When we got our brofur Oreo it took me and my sisfur 3 weeks to get used to him. Meowmie would keep him out with us while she was there watching so I didn't pounce on him.....after about 3 weeks we were used to him and we became snuggle buddies. Now after we just got our new sisfur it only took about 11 days for us to get used to her........I always try to groom her but she thinks I am playing and will jump on me.......oh those claws!!!!! It will work out it just takes time!! Good luck!

eek it took all 6 cats a couple weeks to get used to each other. they all came in at different times. the older ones, they do not like the foster kitties. sometimes they get into arguments over who gets the most attention and swat whoever it is that is getting the attention. anyone that says that cats don't have feelings... is wrong! i still can't believe how much jealousy there is in the cats! kitty

Thank you for starting this post. Mommy is getting me a new furbling in a couple of weeks. She thinks it will help with my too-activeness-at-night and biting her... red face

Keep the advice coming! Mommy is getting one from the humane society and they said they'd help choose a kitty that doesn't mind other cats. I will try to share, but mommy's pillow at night is MINE!

Not to put a damper on things, but I have to ask - as far as the home where you think the cat belongs, did you ask them if they want the cat? Because you should ask first before keeping it. You might have the wrong idea and be taking someone's loved pet. Just a thought, sorry.
