Hi everyone. I'm having problems getting Simon to eat quality canned food. He loves the cheap stuff (friskies, fancy feast, Iams, etc.) but he barely touches the good stuff. We've tried wellness, solid gold, evo, merrick, and even nutro eventhough it's not as good as the others. On an upside, he loves his premium dry food (SG indigo moon). So my question is, should I give him the premium dry with the cheap canned just so he is getting more water in his diet? Or not bother with the cheap canned at all? Any advice is welcomed!

I don't know how well feeding cheap with quality would be. It doesn't seem like a good idea. Because the cheaper quality usually has more calories and stuff. thinking

I don't know, though...

well most people mix dry foods to transition, so I don't see why you can't try this with wet too. I would start with "cheap" canned food and little by little start to mix in more quality canned food each day. With dry, some cats pick out only the kibble they like, but they should not be able to do something like that with wet food blended together.

It might also be a texture difference your cat is not used to. I feed canned BLUE and all of their varieties are like a pate, and alot of Fancy Feast seems to be chunks in gravy. If your cat prefers one, they may not want to switch to another.

Hi, Simon! I'm really not sure what's best, but if you want to stick with this quality dry food, then you may need to moisten it with warm water. This doesn't give as much water as a canned food(78% water), but at least gives more than regular dry food(10% water). It also releases the full aromas and flavors of the food. You may also want to try to find the highest quality variety of the cheaper cat foods, which is usually canned, and mix the Solid Gold dry food in.
Ciao for Now,

Simon do not mix the dry with wet
Although the cooking process kills bacteria in the ingredients, the final product can pick up more bacteria during the subsequent drying, coating, and packaging process. Some experts warn that getting dry food wet can allow the bacteria on the surface to multiply and make pets sick. Do not mix dry food with water, milk, canned food, or other liquids.

Maybe with the higher quality food add a bit of warm water or sprinkle some parmesan cheese on top to entice.
You can slowly add the premium to the cheaper, minimizing the cheaper canned each day.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I don't mix his wet and dry foods. I've been giving him the wet food in the morning when he's wanting to eat... tripping me up in the kitchen... lol. But once I put it down he doesn't want it. That's why I bought a few cans of the cheap to see if he just didn't like canned foods or if he didn't like the ones I was offering. Of course it was the ones I was offering that he didn't like. I think I'll try mixing the cheap stuff with the premium and slowly weaning him off the "junk" food.

Shadow is right, there was just a discussion about adding wet to dry and quickening bacteria growth, so it's good your not mixing them.

I would maybe just try adding a tiny bit of the new stuff to the old stuff over a week or so. When i was testing out foods for Phil, i would ad in about a 1/2 table spoon of new to whatever his old one was. He's more picky with his dry food and will pick out the bits he wants. tricky stinker. but with the wet food if you mash it all around, he wont see the new fod, but you can increase the taste and smell of it over time so hes more used to it!
