So on my way home late last night, I swirve off the road and my fiance is like "whoa." I stopped my truck and told him that I just saw a cat laying in the road looking at me! He said he was not looking at you and was probably already dead. I begged him to go back and look and he did alone. I got a call a few minutes later saying get the small cat carrier and call the vet. He comes back and speeds off to the vets office where my vet met him there. I came a few minutes behind with my sister.
Well Sylvester, a intact male tuxedo has a broken pelvis and is breathing pretty hard. He also has some pretty nasty scrapes on his face and back legs, but nothing major. The vet said everywhere else felt fine and he probably just feels beaten up. Let's see how he does in the morning. He gave him some pain meds, an anitbiotic, and something for shock.
This morning his breathing is much better and the xrays just showed that his pelvis is the only thing broken. He just needs some TLC. Well Sylvester was named by the vet and we figured we'd keep it. Once a stray now he's in a cozy crate. Our only concern now is that he has not gone to the bathroom. They had pellets in his kennel there and I just put some litter in his crate now. Also, I forgot to have him tested for FIV and whatnot during all the commotion. I am sooo scared that if he has something that my other kitties will get it. What precautions should I take till I can get him back to the vets on Monday?
I need everyone to pray that he poos and pees! Also, that there is someway that I can afford to pay this bill when my fiance just lost his job. I've been crying over everything all day, but Sylvester is alive! May god continue to bless us all.
I know what I have to do if he doesn't go. I've discussed this with both my regular vet and the emergency clinic already. Thank you for the prayers. He just scooted his butt into the pan, I hope he goes!
Good luck to Sylvester, and bless you, Celena, for helping. Do remember, that when he was hit by the car he probably 'went' then, so it could take awhile. I'm sure he will hold it as long as possible considering the pelvic pain he must have. hang in there!
If you have even an empty closet, that would probably work to keep him in temporarily, since he won't be wanting to run around so much right now. Obviously, you should at least put a little lamp or light bulb hanging in there though!
We (myself and the vets) also think that it could take a while. He is not going to want to poop and pee on himself. I know that cats are normally very clean animals. I have no clue when he actually got hit, the wounds were pretty fresh when we got him to the vet so it may have been within the hour. It was around 11pm last night when we found him, so I am guessing maybe 10 at night at the latest? I think he may have peed this morning, the kennel smells really musty and he's wet on one side. I gave him a bath yesterday somewhat but I think he would be dry from that already and it smells. I flipped him so the wet side could air out and dry and I cleaned him with some warm water and mild soap. He woke me up meowing. He is making some fast improvements. He is starting to drag himself around more and can actually sit up now. I have him in an extra large dog crate covered with a blanket (so he'll relax if he sees me or my fiance, he's meowing like crazy!) and some blankets, water, food, and a small pan of litter inside. Last night after the accident, he was breathing heavy and he could hardly be moved. I got him on Friday at five and he just laid in the small carrier and when we'd hit a bump he'd cry on the way home. Now, he's moving so much more and he's so alert and affectionate. I mean he'll move himself anywhere your hand is so be petted, it's so sad. I had to hold him from moving when I was trying to wash him up. I hope that what I cleaned up WAS pee and that he poops soon. He's eating like crazy!
So I'm praying that the stinky smell is urine. He is meowing up a storm and I just feed him some wet food with pumpkin in it to try to make him go or at least soften it up. He's such a nice boy and just wants to be loved.
Does anyone have an idea of someone or an organization that could possibly help pay for this guy? He still needs tested and vaccinated but there is no way I can do it. Help.
Introducing Sylvester...Here's my catster profile! I called the vet today because he still hasn't pooped. He said he probably went when he got hit and we don't know how much he had eaten the days before. They said call on Monday if he hasn't.
Hazel Lucy, who runs the Cats in Need of Serious Purring forums thread knows of organizations that can help with vet bills. I would pmail her or post in that thread. She is a really smart cat about those things! We are purring that Sylvester gets better. Bless you for saving him!
