The kind of raw I feed doesn't need all kinds of supplements because all the kitties nutritional needs are being met in their diet. Feeding raw to your cat (or dog) is much, much easier than most people think it is.

Thanks for your posts!

How exactly does the raw meat keep teeth clean? I imagine any food could get lodged in there and permit the growth of bacteria. Is it the difference in the way the cats chew the meat vs. canned food?

It makes me nervous to try raw - especially the bones part. We get dogs in the shelter all of the time with obstructions from bones. Are you sure cats don't have the same problem?

And the raw meat - how much would you give at one time? I imagine it would have to be a small amount so they could eat everything at once in order to prevent the growth of bacteria. Do you select meat for organic properties and look for non-injected cuts? I could seriously just go to Kroger and pick up a chicken breast for the Man? For some reason that makes me nervous but I think I'm just unsure about this whole raw thing.

Thanks,
Braxton

Hey Braxton....go to the Raw Meat Forum....Rhina posted a website there for raw meat. You would be surprised....cats eat big pieces once they ar use to it. (we are not speaking from experience but just from readin)
The dogs probably ate cooked bones...those are bad and get sharp. The raw are not. They may get some in there but can work it out.
There is another post with a link for a 4 week period to get your cat use to it....I will try to find it.

Chloe and Khina:

I've been checking out raw diets all afternoon. CRAZY! Just need to get beyond the human yuck factor...and wait until we move since raw on the road might be a little difficult. I'm so inspired to try it!

In any case, back to the original nature of this thread. I talked to a few people at work about chewing toys for cats like nylabones for dogs but no one seems to have any clue as to what is a good product for a cat to have. Still searching...any ideas?

A few people at our clinic also said that greenies aren't as hot for the choppers as we would like to believe. Apparently they can cause digestive problems...but I'm not sure if I would even feed greenies at this point.

Any new ideas?

You know, before I started a raw diet I was one of those kitties that chewed on cords and wires and stuff. So my girl started buying me beef tendons and pig's ear pieces to satisfy my urge to chew. She reasoned that if I was in the wild I would eat tendons and stuff anyway, so she couldn't figure out what it would hurt. I loved them! So, while she didn't specifically buy them for my dental health I'm sure it must have helped some just like it would help a dog.

Another benefit was it kept my jaw strong so when I did start eating raw I was able to really tear into it right away.

Braxton...
my co-worker uses these for his kitties...they love them. Remind me of teething rings for babies.

Chloe:

Thanks for the suggestion! If I find anything out about these additives, I will certainly let you know. Until now it looks like we're going to try the tooth brush and the raw meat. I have a feeling the food will go over a bit better, though. smile
