What dry cat food do you recommend?

I have four cats total. When I was feeding them Purina Dry Sylvester kept getting hairballs and puking. Now Im feeding them Whiskas Dry and all four of them have really bad gas. Just when I pick one of them up sometimes it just slips right out of them! I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and/or could recommend a brand. (three cats are under a year and sylvester is 13 months.)

I don't like all of the grains and meat by-products in the supermarket brands. I use Wellness Indoor Formula. For hairball problems, you want to see at least a 5% fiber content. Mine are all long haired but Allie was horrid with hairballs before I started feeding them the Wellness and now she rarely has them at all. You also need to make sure that any food change is done gradually by mixing equal amounts of the old and new food and then gradually increasing the new. A sudden switch could be the cause of gas and/or diarrhea. If you can't feed the premium foods and really need to stick with the supermarket brands, Purina One is a better quality than Whiskas or regular Purina Cat Chow. But even that has meat by products, corn gluten, and all sorts of fillers.

The fact that when you pick up one of your kittens, they can't hold their stool is not a good thing. Is it diarrhea? Then, as in your other question, the food made for both adults and kittens is not appropriate. Allie's mom feeds Wellness and my cats are on Purina One. Very seldom do I notice gas or diarrhea problems. If your kittens/Sylvester have not been to a vet yet, it might be a good time to go to get one on board.

Oscar J. Cat

Oscar J. Cat eats Purina One.

Remember that when you switch foods, you have to do it gradually or they're going to have some tummy upset. Mix them together until you've completely replaced the other food.

Black Velvet

I used Royal Canin kitten food. Then switched to Blue mountin low car high protein food. They are on the expensive side and at pet stores or online only. But the vets say that to much dry food is not good for them anyway. So I give my 4 babies dry food as a snack after they have eaten their canned food. Good luck
